ACT WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE
MATCHDAY 3
Sunday 17th April 2016
League leaders Gungahlin United will be out to maintain their 100% start to the season when they meet Tuggeranong United in Round 3 of the ACT Women’s Premier League at Gungahlin Enclosed this weekend. The Gunners will aim to build on their perfect start to 2016 having won both their matches to date and scored fifteen goals with Ashleigh Palombi averaging three a game for the league leaders.
Tuggeranong were unfortunate to lose narrowly at Woden-Weston FC in Round 2 having played some good football in passages throughout the game. Increasing their cutting edge in the final third will be key to them achieving their expected success this season and they have the personnel to do so. First however, they will need to find a way to thwart the Gunners rampant attacking threat.
Canberra FC, who also boast a 100% record after two rounds, welcome Woden-Weston FC to Deakin Stadium on Sunday knowing that they must claim the three points if they are to build on their remarkable 1-0 success at treble winners Belconnen United seven days ago. Grace Gill netted the match-winner against the Blue Devils but an untimely injury means she will likely miss this match and, perhaps, a large chunk of the season.
Their opponents meanwhile came off a loss in Week 1 to record a 2-0 success over Tuggeranong United at the Australian Institute of Sport where goals from Rhianna Goldstein and substitute Leah Carnegie gave them the three points. They will approach the game with confidence but FC will start as favourites.
The last match of the round sees Belconnen United aiming to bounce back from a rare defeat when they meet the CU Academy at Hawker Football Centre. The Blue Devils were surprised by Canberra FC in Round 2 and will be determined to stamp their authority back onto a competition they have dominated in recent years when they meet the Academy girls on the synthetic field.
