ACT WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE
MATCHDAY 8
Sunday 5th June

The ACT Women’s Premier League reaches the halfway mark on Matchday 8 with both Belconnen United and Gungahlin United stretching clear at the top of the ladder and the pair will be confident of cementing their positions at the conclusion of this weekend’s matches.

Leaders Belconnen United will take on the bottom club, CU Academy, at McKellar Park and, whilst the Blue Devils will be heavy favourites to take the victory, the Academy have been playing some good football in recent weeks and have enough technique and ability to cause a number of problems for their more experienced opponents. There is no doubt that this has been a steep learning curve for the Academy players but they were in decent nick against Gungahlin United and can be expected to step up again for this difficult challenge.

Gungahlin United meanwhile head sto the Australian Institute of Sport to take on Tuggeranong United. Tuggeranong gave their top four chances a real boost last weekend when they recorded a 3-1 away win over Woden-Weston FC to move to within a point of the Wanderers on the league ladder. Alex Lawrence grabbed a hat-trick in that match and with her back in form, and Meg McLaughlin and Sandra Hill showing excellent form, Tuggeranong have the firepower to trouble the title-chasing Gunners.

Over at Deakin Stadium Canberra FC will be looking to try and hang on to the coat-tails of the leading pair as they welcome Woden-Weston FC. The narrow loss to Belconnen United on Matchday 7 was the Deakin-based club’s first of the season and with a game in hand on their rivals above them, they will be confident that they can force themselves into title contention before the season’s end.

In order to do that they will need three points against a Woden-Weston outfit that, despite only having seven points from seven matches, have been extremely competitive in every outing so far in 2016. The last time these sides met at this venue the game ended 0-0. We would expect there to be goals this time around.
