Women’s Federation Cup
Round 4

Sunday 26th June
Gungahlin United 4 (Ashleigh Palombi 10’, 34’, Caitlin Cantrill 28’, Brittany Palombi 80’) Woden-Weston FC 1 (Loretta Raap 26’)
(O’Connor Enclosed)

By David Jordan

A first-half double from Ashleigh Palombi helped Gungahlin overcome Woden-Weston 4-1 in the Federation Cup on Sunday, as Ashleigh and sister Brittany led the charge on a fresh afternoon at O’Connor. Ashleigh opened the scoring 10 minutes in as she was left unmarked at the back post to head in from Brittany’s corner; awarded after Georgia Fogarty’s low drive was tipped away by Woden-Weston custodian Georgia Boric.

United’s lead held for merely two minutes, as Woden-Weston surged forward from the restart to pressure the opposition defence. Edith Meli received a short pass at the top of the 18-yard box, and her touch fell perfectly for Raap whose floated effort beat Sophie Rolfe in goals.

Gungahlin looked to respond quickly with Ashleigh Palombi leading the show form an advanced position, and after 28 minutes a tidy back-heel sent Natalie De Marco scurrying down the wing. De Marco crossed well into the box, and the ball fell perfectly for Cantrill to tuck home from close range. Six minutes later Gungahlin struck again, with a replica of the first goal.

Brittany Palombi’s well-taken corner found her sister Ashleigh at the back-post, and despite the ball coming off her knee, it hit the back of the net to send United into the break on the right side of a 3-1 advantage.

With Sarah Crittenden doing her best to stop the tide in the Woden-Weston midfield, Gungahlin began to push hard after the break, with Boric denying first Ashleigh Palombi and then Cantrill from close range. Brittany Palombi stuck the crossbar with a fierce hit as the game entered its final 20 minutes, before finally getting a goal of her own with ten minutes to go.

After beating her marker to the ball and racing through, Palombi struck the ball hard and low into the far corner, leaving Boric flat-footed in goals. United continued to press and perform as the better side for the remained of the match, running out 4-1 winners.
