ACT WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE
MATCHDAY 11
By Samuel Habtemariam
Saturday 9th July
Belconnen United v Tuggeranong United
(McKellar Park, 17:00)
League leaders Belconnen United start the round with a tough home game against Tuggeranong United. The Blue Devils have been ruthless this season only losing one game. The two teams last met in the season opener, when Belconnen won a resounding 7-2. Leading scorers and influential stars Ellie Raymond and Michaela Day will look to help extend the ten-point gap at the top of the table. Tuggeranong come into the game after a really solid 8-0 performance against CU Academy. Tuggeranong will look to overtake Woden-Weston with what would be a surprise victory, but it’s something they have achieved at this venue before, so it’s not beyond them. Tuggeranong’s key player, Meg McLaughlin, looks the most likely to score for Tuggeranong having netted ten league goals this season. Belconnen come into the game as favourites, but don’t rule out Tuggeranong United.
Sunday 10th July
Gungahlin United v Woden-Weston FC
(Gungahlin Enclosed, 14:00)
Gungahlin Enclosed is set to house a second versus fourth showdown. With ten points separating the two teams Gungahlin look favourites to win. Needing a win in this game to stay in touch with Belconnen for the title race, Gungahlin’s superstar sisters Brittany Palombi and Ashleigh Palombi will look to add to their combined 21 goals for the season. Erika Pennyfield and her Woden-Weston teammates need a victory to assure they keep their fourth place spot on the table. The last time the two teams met, Woden-Weston failed to score in a 4-0 loss and this time they will look to put things right when they take on the title chasing Gunners. Gungahlin United are bang on form however and their firepower up front may be too much to handle for the Woden-Weston defense.
Canberra FC v CU Academy
(Deakin Stadium, 14:00)
Having failed to register a win this season after having played some brilliant football, CU Academy will look to grab their first success of the campaign when they take on Canberra FC at Deakin Stadium. CU Academy Captain Isabella Tammaro will look to put in a strong performance against third place Canberra FC, who is after the points for entirely different reasons. After picking up only one win in their last four league games Canberra FC will look to replicate their 8-1 victory when the teams last met. Marcia Wallis will look to pounce on the CU Academy defense and pick up a few goals to add to her season total of four. The game hangs in favour of Canberra FC, but a great CU Academy performance could shock the league.
